Tyler Melbourne-Smith dove in for the men’s 400m freestyle and produced the sole time of the field under the 3:50 barrier en route to victory.
Following up on his 200m freestyle gold from day two, Loughborough’s Melbourne-Smith clocked a time of 3:48.30 to get the job done in the 400m free.
His effort represents a new lifetime best, shaving .16 off his previous PB of 3:48.46 notched at last year’s edition of this competition when it was known as the British Summer Championships. He now ranks 17th on the all-time British performers list.
16-year-old Theodora Taylor ripped a lifetime best in the 50m freestyle already here and followed up with a solid performance to take her age group’s 200m breaststroke.
Taylor produced a winning time of 2:28.17 to take the race by over 3 seconds.
That once again registered a lifetime best, overtaking her previous career-swiftest time of 2:28.71 put up for silver at the 2024 European Junior Championships.
In the open 200m breast for women last night, Loughborough’s Lily Booker hit a time of 2:27.55 as the sole competitor of the field to dip under the 2:30 threshold.
That was about 2 seconds off her PB of 2:25.75 logged at last year’s Olympic Trials to rank as GBR’s 13th-best performer in history.
Sweeping the open men’s backstroke events was Bath’s Matthew Ward, with the 20-year-old earning gold in the 200m back event.
Ward punched a result of 1:58.81 to handily defeat the field, as Sheffield’s Samuel Greenbank snagged silver in 2:01.64 followed by Hubert Gdaniec who bagged bronze in 2:02.98.
Ward’s time checked in as his first-ever foray under the 1:59 barrier, surpassing his previous PB of 1:59.03 posted at last year’s Olympic Trials.
Additional Notes
17-year-old Skye Carter of Basildon Phoenix hit a time of 59.98 to take the 17/18-year-old girls’ 100m fly. Just as last night the rising star posted her first-ever result under the 55-second barrier in the 100m free (54.78), this 100m fly marked her first time under the 1:00 threshold. Entering this competition, Carter’s PB rested at the 1:00.56 notched at last November’s Rotterdam Qualification Meet. The women’s open 100m fly saw University of Stirling swimmer Lucy Grieve turn in a time of 59.00, holding off Betsy Wizard of Northampton who settled for silver just over half a second back in 59.56. Shannon Stott of Sheffield rounded out the podium in 1:00.10. A multi-medalist at this year’s European Junior Championships, Dean Fearn topped the 17/18-year-old boys’ 50m fly podium. The Aberdean athlete stopped the clock at 23.71, a time within striking distance of the 23.29 meet record he registered for gold in Slovakia just weeks ago. Jacob Peters was the top performer in the open men’s 50m fly, turning in a time of 23.26. He’s been as quick as 22.84 in his career, a result from the 2023 World Championships which made him GBR’s #2 performer of all time, sitting only behind national record holder Ben Proud (22.75, 2017). Swansea’s Lewis Fraser was next to the wall in 23.73 followed by Jamie Ingram who hit 24.06 as the bronze medalist.Read the full story on SwimSwam: Taylor, Carter & Melbourne-Smith Close Out 2025 Aquatics GB Next Gen With Personal Bests
