The Las Vegas Raiders announced a shock decision to release Christian Wilkins on Thursday.
In the wake of a dispute over whether or not the defensive tackle should undergo surgery on his injured foot, the NFL organization are attempting to void $35.25million in remaining guarantees on his contract.
Wilkins has been released by the Raiders amid a dispute over his injury recoveryGettyWilkins fractured his left foot in Week 5 of the 2024 season, and was placed on injured reserve following surgery to repair a Jones fracture.
He missed all of the Raiders‘ remaining games, and went on the physically unable to perform list (PUP) to begin training camp ahead of the new year.
While the team wanted him to get surgery, the 29-year-old declined after receiving several opinions, and has now been released.
A statement from the Raiders confirmed: “We have decided that it is in the best interests of the organization to move on from Christian Wilkins and he has been informed of his release from the team.
“This franchise has a Commitment to Excellence on and off the field.
“With no clear path or plan for future return to play from Christian, this transaction is necessary for the entire organization to move forward and prepare for the new season.”
The split between the two parties is particularly surprising considering Las Vegas signed the DT to a four-year, $110m extension last spring, with $84.75m guaranteed.
Wilkins takes action against the Raiders
As the team are attempting to void the remaining guarantees on his contract due to a ‘failure to maintain his physical condition to play’, a grievance has been filed by the NFLPA (Players Association) on Wilkins’ behalf to fight such action taking place.
The player had 50 days from June 4 to ask the NFLPA to file a grievance on his behalf, and the union did so Thursday, the last day it was eligible.
According to ESPN, the next step after filing a grievance would be a hearing.
Wilkins signed a mega-money $110m deal with Las Vegas in 2024Getty The team are attempting to void the remaining guarantees on his contractGettyThe situation is a far cry from what the Raiders — who are now co-owned by legendary quarterback Tom Brady — had in mind 12 months ago.
Wilkins was the biggest get for the Raiders last offseason, and was widely considered the best defensive tackle available at the time.
It was hoped he was capable of turning a team’s D-line around, but instead the former first-round pick delivered just 17 tackles and two sacks across his five games in Las Vegas.
After he underwent initial surgery for a Jones fracture, Wilkins was still not ready to take part in organized team activities earlier this year, despite being in attendance.
What has Raiders coach Pete Carroll said on the Wilkins situation?
New Raiders head coach Pete Carroll had described his recovery as ‘challenging’.
“He’s not ready to get back out and we’re in the midst of a long, challenging process,” Carroll said in May.
Raiders HC Carroll admitted in May that Wilkins’ recovery was challengingGetty“Fortunately there’s a lot of time and we’re gonna take every bit of it. We’re really trying to be really diligent.”
However, two months on, Carroll had been forced to admit that the lineman’s return to the field was ‘uncertain’ after he was placed on the PUP list.
With a dispute over his recovery, Las Vegas have now made the difficult decision to move on from Wilkins, leaving a hole in their defense with just weeks until the new season kicks off.
Wilkins, meanwhile, should generate interest among other NFL teams and while he would make an impact on any roster when healthy, questions will be asked over the issues that led to his release from the Raiders.
