One week before the release of their debut EP “Bad Optics,” the new band Cult Vacant stopped by Live & Local on Wednesday.

Formed last year, Cult Vacant consists of Marc Rodriguez, Drew Dubiel, and Caleb Shipman. (You may remember Rodriguez from his previous project, Fool In Utopia; he’s put that one on hold to focus on Cult Vacant instead.)
“All the energy went to (Cult Vacant),” he says, “because we started making way better music. I’m really proud of what we’re doing now.”
The new EP, “Bad Optics,” officially drops on July 30, but the band has already made a splash with the release of their lead single “Memory.”
“It’s been really great being able to write with these guys,” Rodriguez says of their process. “Sometimes writing alone in a studio isn’t the way to do it…We’re trying to just be happy, goofy guys, (and) at the end of the day, it’s good having (other) people to make decisions, like, ‘okay, we’re done, we’re choosing this (and) moving forward.'”
Cult Vacant is celebrating the EP release with a show at Kings on August 15.
Cult Vacant stopped by Live & Local to discuss the EP and play two songs, “Toothless” and “Wilmington.” Listen:
