A police officer in Texas helped save a child’s life after the toddler began choking at a gas station on Saturday.
The officer, identified as Cpl. Lee Higginbotham of the Dallas Veterans Affairs department, had stopped for gas when he noticed a crowd calling for help. A 2-year-old was visibly struggling to breathe.
Realizing the child was growing “weaker by the second,” Cpl. Higginbotham quickly began performing the Heimlich maneuver.
Body camera footage captured the moment an object was expelled from the child’s airway.
“I just did what anyone in my position would hope to do,” Cpl. Higginbotham said after the incident. “I’m grateful I was in the right place at the right time and able to help.”
Dallas Fire-Rescue paramedics arrived shortly after, along with paramedics who checked the child and made sure he was safe to go home.
“His quick thinking and compassion truly made all the difference. We’re proud to have officers like him protecting not just our VA campus and the Veterans that we serve, but the whole community,” Dallas VA Police Chief Michael Dvorak said.
