CHESTER, S.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) – As the summer pattern for thunderstorms continues, neighbors in Chester brace for the worst. Runoff issues have forced two families out of their homes because they say it’s no longer safe to live there.
We first introduced you to Tierra Wilson back in April. She and another neighbor moved out of their homes in Jeter Heights because they said their homes never dry out.
“I’ve lost just about everything,” Wilson said. “It’s sitting here – it ain’t a house no more to me.”
In January, Wilson moved in with a relative in Huntersville and makes the hour-plus commute every day for overnight work to support and protect her family.
“It was killing me to live here, but now I feel like it’s killing me to,” Wilson said. “I live a lot better now, but I’m not getting no sleep.”
Tierra Wilson.Another neighbor who did not want to be identified said the water gets stuck in her air conditioning duct. You can see where the tires of her car are now buried by the shifting ground.
City Administrator Malik Whitaker told Queen City News that the issue is driven by a combination of natural topography, including a tributary that runs through the area and aging, undersized drainage infrastructure, especially along Stadium Drive, which falls under the South Carolina Department of Transportation or SCDOT’s jurisdiction.
The city received a $250,000 stormwater planning grant through the South Carolina Rural Infrastructure Authority that it plans to use to study the reason for the flooding issues in this neighborhood.
After our story aired in April, SCDOT said it cleared the drainage pipes in the right of way – but said it has not gotten any more requests to clean them since. The Bowman Engineering Group is waiting for a finalized contract to start finding the culprit behind the flooding.
A study will start when that contract is signed. A city official said volume of water and damage are a top priority here.
While neighbors wait for answers, mold grows on their walls.
You can submit a maintenance work request for SCDOT here.
