CLEVELAND, OH (WHEC) – The Buffalo Bills didn’t play many of their starters against the Cleveland Browns, but it didn’t matter, because the bench guys took care of business, winning 31-7.
While it wasn’t the stars making the big plays, it was names you probably know if you’re turned in with the Bills. Vets like Ray Davis, Damar Hamlin, and Mecole Hardman all made huge plays, with Davis and Hardman scoring touchdowns and Hamlin picking off Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders.
The Bills also got a huge lift from both quarterbacks. Kyle Allen was in total command, completing 10 of his 12 passes for 128 yards. His lone passing touchdown came in a quick four play drive right before the end of the first half, that lasted under a minute. Shane Buechele was less accurate, going 5-of-10 for 111 yards, but he did throw a TD pass and run for another.
But the player of the game was easily wide receiver Ja’Mori Maclin. The cousin of former NFL veteran Jeremy Maclin, he caught a 37 yard pass in the first half as a part of the touchdown drive to end the first half. In the second half, Maclin caught a medium-range throw from Buechele and sped past Browns defenders the rest of the way for a 71-yard scamper and score.
“It’s definitely a blessing. I haven’t really fully soaked it in yet, because I’m trying to shower, trying to get on a plane, go see my family, but I’m definitely grateful. God has blessed me with this opportunity,” said Maclin.
While he likely won’t crack the 53-man roster, a game like this shows Maclin’s worth on the practice squad.
Other players who performed well included running back Ian Wheeler (14 carries for 56 yards), running back Frank Gore Jr. (9 carries for 54 yards), and linebacker Javon Solomon (4 total tackles, 1 sack).
The Buffalo Bills will return home as players try and give their last effort to make the team, with their final preseason game on Thursday at 7 against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
