Five Qatari Aircraft Arrive to Help Battle Coastal Wildfires ...Syria

News by : (ُEnabbaladi) -

The Syrian Civil Defense announced on Saturday, July 12, the arrival of specialized search, rescue, and firefighting teams from Qatar’s Ministry of Interior (Lekhwiya).

It explained that the teams are equipped with advanced machinery and tools, as well as aircraft specifically designated for firefighting, to contribute to the intensive efforts to control the wildfires raging in the forests of rural Latakia and to prevent their spread—protecting the environment and local communities.

This assistance is part of a broader initiative to strengthen regional cooperation in disaster response and minimize environmental and social damage.

Syrian Minister of Emergency and Disaster Management, Raed al-Saleh, confirmed via a post on platform X that Qatar dispatched five aircraft carrying firefighting helicopters, fire trucks, and 138 personnel.

He also addressed some of the public suggestions for halting the fire’s spread, stating that several proposals are currently not feasible due to Syria’s lack of infrastructure after 14 years of devastating war. Others are in the pipeline as part of preemptive planning.

“We are applying all standard wildfire suppression methods, including isolation, firebreaks, and preemptive containment. We have seasoned experts, field commanders, and highly trained teams, along with additional support from Turkish and Jordanian crews—and soon from Iraq,” al-Saleh said.

He also noted that the presence of landmines and unexploded ordnance, as well as shifting winds and sparks traveling hundreds of meters, have made operations more complex.

Mazen Alloush, Director of Public Relations at the General Authority for Land and Sea Border Crossings, announced the temporary closure of the Kassab border crossing from the Turkish side due to the fires approaching the border region.

Fires Continue into Tenth Day

The Civil Defense said via its Facebook page that its crews continue to combat wildfires in Latakia’s forests for the tenth consecutive day. Efforts focus on extinguishing and cooling hotspots in Jabal al-Nisr, Burj Zahiyah, al-Baraka, and Sheikh Hassan.

Operations involve isolating fire zones, cutting fire lines through forests, and enhancing air support to prevent the flames from spreading.

Firefighters successfully contained several fires near the Qastal Maaf–Kassab road, despite facing hazards from exploding remnants of war.

Civil Defense teams continue their work through joint operations rooms, coordinating ground and aerial efforts with engineering machinery and water supply lines to maintain high standards of professionalism.

Wildfires in Hama Countryside

On Friday, July 11, Syrian Civil Defense teams extinguished two wildfires in the Hama countryside.

According to a Facebook statement, the Hama fires are unrelated to the Latakia forest blazes.

The first fire broke out in the Naba al-Tayyib area and was put out by 33 responders, 10 fire trucks, and additional logistical and technical support vehicles.
