Neiman Marcus puts rumors of Northbrook Court store closure to rest ...Middle East

News by : (NBC Chicago) -

Neiman Marcus, the last remaining department store at Northbrook Court in the northern suburbs, is setting the record straight about its rumored closure amid a wave of recent store shutdowns at the struggling and mostly empty mall.

In a statement sent to NBC Chicago, the luxury department store, which opened at the once-bustling mall in 1976, said the retailer remains open for business.

“Neiman Marcus Northbrook has been a proud part of this community for nearly 50 years, building deep relationships with our customers and neighbors,” the statement said. “We have no plans to close our store. We remain committed to providing the exceptional service and thoughtfully curated product assortment our customers know and love.”

The statement also hinted at potential redevelopment of the shopping center.

“We’re excited about the upcoming developments and the opportunity they bring to reinvigorate this area,” Neiman Marcus said.

In 2023, mall owner Brookfield Properties earned village approval to move forward with an $825 million plan to redevelop and revitalize the area, Crain’s reported, including a 10-year conceptual plan to create an “outdoor retail/dining destination” on part of the property, along with residential development and a possible teardown of the existing buildings.

The proposal “reimagines” the development set forth in 2019 prior to the pandemic, which originally included an apartment complex, grocery store, and other retailers on the site of the now-demolished Macy’s, a report from the Northbrook Chamber of Commerce and Industry showed.

A March 2025 report from CRE Daily said Brookfield Properties was set to begin its redevelopment of the mall with housing and residential construction over a retail revamp.

Earlier this year, Brookfield Properties told NBC Chicago the mall “continues to work diligently with the Village of Northbrook to create a development plan that balances the needs of the community with the requirements for a commercially viable project.”

“In the meantime, we remain transparent with tenants on the need to maintain flexibility as we work through the redevelopment plans,” the firm’s statement went on to say. The

NBC Chicago has reached out to Brookfield Properties and the Village of Northbrook for an update, but neither had immediately responded at the time of publication.

In addition to Neiman Marcus, approximately two dozen other stores remain open at the mall, including Chanel, White House Black Market, The Lego Store and Chico’s, the mall’s website showed. The mall is also home to two popular indoor Hi-Five Sports Zone locations, which offer sports camps and classes for kids as young as two-years-old, up to seventh grade.

Earlier this year, the often busy Apple Store at the mall announced it was closing, citing the mall’s “evolving redevelopment plans” and recent departure of several retailers. Lululemon, Forever21, Auntie Anne’s and Sephora also shuttered.
