SAN DIEGO — The Arizona Diamondbacks had two potential home runs robbed by San Diego Padres outfielders in a 1-0 loss on Tuesday night.
It’s not very common to see one home run robbery, but they happen on occasion. Going to a game and seeing two? That’s quite the rare sight.
Corbin Carroll sent a ball deep to center field in the fifth inning in a 0-0 stalemate. Jackson Merrill leaped at the wall and robbed Carroll of the go-ahead, two-run home run.
Down 1-0 in the eighth, Josh Naylor shot a ball to right field only for Fernando Tatis Jr. to bring it back.

Blame it on the salty air, bad luck or simply two tremendous plays defensively, but the home run robberies — and a solo home run by Luis Arraez — proved to be the difference in the game.
Arizona received a shutout loss for the second time in three days, spoiling a masterful start from Merrill Kelly.
Merrill Kelly dominant vs. Padres
Kelly tossed seven innings with one earned run on four hits, and he did not throw more than 13 pitches in any single frame. He did not walk anyone, and while he only struck out four batters, Kelly consistently drew weak contact.
The Padres did not score until Arraez led off the seventh inning with a home run.
Kelly was pulled after seven innings at only 77 pitches, as John Curtiss threw the eighth inning.
His counterpart, Padres starter Nick Pivetta, delivered 5.2 scoreless innings with seven strikeouts.
Missed chances
The two home run robberies also stick out because the D-backs failed to execute in two critical spots.
The Diamondbacks nearly broke through in the fourth inning but stranded the bases loaded with one out. Pivetta struck out Eugenio Suarez and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. to end the jam.
Against the San Diego bullpen, Arizona loaded the bases again in the seventh inning, but Ketel Marte struck out to end the frame.
The D-backs (45-47) finished 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position and left nine men on base.
Up next for Diamondbacks
The third leg of this four-game series starts at 6:40 p.m. MST on Wednesday. Brandon Pfaadt (5.42 ERA) will start for Arizona, while veteran right-hander Dylan Cease (4.62 ERA) will go for San Diego.
The series is even at 1-1.
