Arizona State on Tuesday was named the winner of the Big 12 Conference’s inaugural Commissioner’s Cup for the 2024-25 year.
The cup is awarded to the university that best exemplifies a commitment to excellence both on and off the field.
Points for the cup were based are combination of “NCAA Graduation Success Rate, Big 12 regular and postseason titles, plus on-campus programs offered that focus on community engagement, mental health and career development.”
Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark announced the honor on Tuesday during the first of two Big 12 media days being held in Frisco, Texas.
“I’m just incredibly proud,” ASU athletic director Graham Rossini said in a press release. “Most importantly, I think it’s a good validation that we’re on our way.

“It’s nice that the conference looked at not only athletic performance but academic performance, community engagement and outreach. I think it’s a great representation of everything that we’re trying to focus on. To do it in year one is a great validation of what we’re capable of and what we want to be in the Big 12.”
Arizona State certainly had athletic success this past year, with four Sun Devil teams (football, volleyball, and men’s and women’s swimming) winning conference championships last season. Lacrosse, beach volleyball and men’s and women’s golf were also runners-up for state championships.
“Our schools continue to provide world-class experiences for our student-athletes on and off the field,” Yormark said. “I applaud everyone, including our coaches, who have helped elevate our student-athletes’ collegiate journeys. Congratulations to President Michael Crow, Graham Rossini and the entire Sun Devils community.”
Alongside their athletic success, student-athletes paved the way with their strong academic performance. During the spring of 2025, Arizona State student-athletes had a average cumulative GPA of 3.37 according to ASU.
On top of that, 135 student-athletes obtained a 4.0 cumulative or semester GPA and 48% of all Sun Devil student-athletes earned a spot on the Dean’s list (semester GPA of 3.5 or higher).
“Look, we want to win at the highest level. I’ve said that repeatedly,” Rossini said. “But the whole point of what we do is to prepare young people for the real world. When you see our academic progress rate and our graduation success rate continuing to maintain and grow at elite levels, that’s important to me.”
