Fluminense vs Chelsea predictions
Just a few short months ago, Enzo Maresca was under pressure as Chelsea manager.
After a strong start to the season, the London club’s form collapsed shortly before Christmas. Positive results were hard to come by for months, particularly away from home.
Maresca’s style of play was criticised by large sections of the fan base, who felt his possession-based game stifled individual creativity.
Needless to say, the Italian is a great deal more secure in his position now. He eventually steadied the ship in the Premier League and got Chelsea back on track, resulting in a fourth-place finish which means they will compete in the Champions League next term.
Chelsea also won their first trophy of the post-Roman Abramovich era in the form of the Conference League. Now they are two victories away from adding another piece of silverware to the Stamford Bridge cabinet, as Maresca’s men seek glory at the Club World Cup.
It must be said that Chelsea’s attempts to go all the way in the USA have been aided by a kind draw. They only finished second in their group after beating LAFC and Espérance de Tunis, but losing to Flamengo in between those two triumphs.
That meant they were liable to face Bayern Munich in the next round, but the German giants also slipped up in the group stage and finished as runners-up. Chelsea battled Benfica instead, and a flurry of goals in extra time saw them run out 4-1 winners.
That brought a quarter-final tie against Palmeiras, which Chelsea negotiated with a 2-1 win. Another Brazilian opponent awaits in the semis rather than Manchester City, who had been tipped to reach the last four in Chelsea’s half of the bracket.
You can only beat what is in front of you, though, and it would be churlish to dismiss Chelsea’s run to the semis as the result only of the draw opening up for them. Maresca’s side have grown into the tournament and they will now be quietly confident of going all the way, even if Paris Saint-Germain or Real Madrid would be the favourites in any prospective final.
Not that Chelsea should be thinking any further ahead than Tuesday’s tussle with Fluminense, of course. Renato Gaúcho’s side are more than capable of giving the Blues a bloody nose if they take their eye off the ball.

Chelsea are one step away from securing their place in the final of the 2025 Club World Cup.

Fluminense have also benefited from a relatively gentle run to the semis.
That does not mean they are a bad side, but the Tricolor’s only victory over a European side came against an Inter side still reeling from their second-place finishes in both Serie A and the Champions League last season.
If Chelsea play to their potential, they should come out on top. Maresca has experimented so far at the tournament, but now his team are in the semis he will probably play things safe.
This is likely to be a close game and Fluminense will have their moments, but Chelsea should get the job done within 90 minutes.

Only one of Chelsea’s five games at the Club World Cup has featured under 2.5 goals, so in one sense this is a risky bet.
Now we are at the semi-final stage, though, caution could creep in for both teams. That is particularly so for Fluminense, who are desperate to make Brazil proud by reaching the tournament showpiece.
Fluminense have been involved in two 0-0 draws so far, and their defeat of Inter in the round of 16 also contained fewer than three goals.
They will aim to keep things tight at the back first and foremost, so this may end up being a low-scoring affair.

João Pedro joined Chelsea last Wednesday and immediately made his way to the USA for the remainder of the Club World Cup.
He made his debut off the bench against Palmeiras in the last eight and is now pushing to start this match.
“The reason why we decided to involve him is because since he arrived, even if he was on holiday, he looks sharp, he looks good, and we wanted to give him some minutes,” Maresca said of the former Brighton & Hove Albion frontman.
João Pedro began his career with Fluminense, scoring 10 goals in 37 games for the club before joining Watford.
The 23-year-old could come back to bite his former club, whose academy he joined aged 10, in East Rutherford on Tuesday.
