A Boonville man was arrested for alleged assault with a deadly weapon after reportedly attacking a 74-year-old with a machete, the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office reported.
According to the MCSO, deputies responded to the 21000 block of Redwood Ridge Road in Boonville around 7:45 p.m. July 1 when it was reported that a man had been assaulted.
When deputies arrived, the victim – who was identified only as a 74-year-old man – reported that the suspect, identified as 43-year-old Ryan Stearns of Boonville, had come into his house “without warning and brandished a machete-style tool above his head as he approached the victim. The victim attempted to defend himself and was able to physically resist the machete attack” from Stearns, who reportedly ran from the scene.
The MCSO reports that the victim’s hand was cut during the assault, and emergency medical personnel were summoned to treat the man on-scene.
The MCSO reports that deputies found “the machete and other evidence at the scene which were consistent with the victim’s statements and corroborated a violent assault occurred,” also noting that deputies determined that the victim and suspect knew each other, and the victim described Stearns as living “a transient lifestyle and (that) his current whereabouts were unknown.”
After Stearns was not located in Boonville, “an order to arrest (him) was issued and sent to law enforcement agencies within Mendocino County.”
Two days later, deputies responded to Boonville again around noon July 3, as the MCSO reports that “several local citizens had reported sightings of Stearns in the Boonville and Navarro areas, (and) one citizen shared information that Stearns was known to travel from Boonville to Ukiah on a motorized bicycle, (and) would sometimes travel to Comptche and on Orr Springs Road.”
Around 2:25 p.m. July 3, the MCSO reports receiving a call from an employee at the Comptche Store reporting “an intoxicated male who was causing the disturbance at the store,” and when told that law enforcement was being called, the suspect “ran into a wooded area to the north of the store.”
After determining the suspect was likely Stearns based “on another citizen seeing him on a motorized bicycle earlier in the day,” deputies searched the area and reported finding Stearns “hiding in a thick wooded area … obviously trying to avoid apprehension by law enforcement.”
Stearns was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, burglary and elder abuse causing injury, and booked into Mendocino County Jail under $50,000 bail.
The MCSO thanked “the alert citizens of Anderson Valley for sharing information on the whereabouts of Stearns and their assistance in locating and safely taking him into custody.”
