All-around offensive explosion propels Alabama past LSU New Orleans ...Middle East

News by : (The Crimson White) -

Alabama women’s basketball didn’t need any one player to have an offensive explosion in its 118-45 win over LSU New Orleans, but everyone managed to chip in.

The 118-point night was the first time Alabama scored 100 points in a game since its matchup with Maryland in the second round of the 2025 NCAA Tournament. With eight players reaching double figures, the achievement was a true team effort for the Crimson Tide.

“It just takes the pressure off of us individually,” said forward Aaliyah Roberson. “It’s not just one person scoring. It’s collective, so it’s hard to scout, and it’s hard to defend.”

An early three-point shot and an and-one at the rim by Roberson gave Alabama its first six points of the game. She finished the quarter with eight points and four rebounds, as Alabama took a commanding 30-6 lead.

After taking a backseat to start the game, sophomore guard Ace Austin exploded for a 12-point second quarter. That hot streak included a behind-the-back layup in transition, which elicited oohs and aahs from the Alabama crowd.

Sophomore guard Tianna Chambers generated shots for herself and her teammates throughout the game, finishing with 10 points, five rebounds and five assists. Mykelle Richards was the most successful at getting to the free throw line of the group, making 6-of-9 to reach 17 points on the night.

Alayna West similarly had an all-around performance with 17 points, 14 rebounds and nine assists. Her six points and three rebounds in the third quarter helped the team stay in an offensive rhythm while Austin took a rest.

Alabama finished that quarter with 87 points, more than it scored in all but one game last season.

“I just play every game and do what I can every game,” West said. “This game, my coaches wanted to put me in a position to do more, so I think I just showed that.”

The Crimson Tide feasted in transition. Turning the Privateers over 11 times in the first quarter and 36 times on the night, Alabama finished with 48 points off turnovers.

Those fast-break shots were some of the team’s primary ways of generating points, and the easy looks players were able to get off steals set up the rest of the offense for its dominant night.

“We always talk about flow and how we need to be disruptive defensively,” Love said. “I don’t think I would have said this months ago if our defense needed to be really, really good in order to have offensive flow, but this is the identity of this team right now.

Love came to Alabama with the goal of establishing a fast-paced, high volume offense. The offensive explosion across the board tonight offers a promising return on that vision, and the team appears to have resonated with that identity.

“We want to be able to function fast and play with a lot of pace and space,” Love said. “We always talk about evidence of excellence, and this is a true indication of that evidence tonight.”

Alabama will play its third game in four days against Alabama A&M on Thursday. Tipoff is set for 6:00 p.m. CT, and it can be seen on SEC Network+.
