The Phoenix Mercury are expected to bring back one of the most accomplished players in franchise history, DeWanna Bonner, ESPN’s Michael Voepel and Josh Weinfuss reported on Monday.

Bonner, 37, played her first 10 WNBA seasons in Phoenix, winning three straight Sixth Player of the Year awards to begin her career.

The 2009 No. 5 overall pick went on to make three All-Star teams and earn an All-WNBA First Team spot in 2015, when she finished sixth in the MVP race.

Bonner — a 6-foot-4 guard-forward — was also a member of two championship wins in Phoenix (2009, 2014). Phoenix traded Bonner after the 2019 season season to the Connecticut Sun for three first-round picks, and she made three more All-Star Games with her new squad.

She finished her first Mercury tenure with an average of 14.4 points, 6.2 rebounds and 2.1 assists.

Bonner signed with the Indiana Fever ahead of this season, but that partnership did not last. She only played nine games before missing five due to “personal reasons.” After the Fever reportedly sought a trade partner, they waived Bonner.

“Despite our shared goals and excitement heading into the season, I felt the fit did not work out and I appreciate the organization’s willingness to grant my request to move on, particularly at this point in my career,” Bonner said in a press release after getting waived.

Bonner sat courtside at Phoenix’s game on Monday against the Dallas Wings before any move was announced.

The Mercury — led by an All-Star trio of Satou Sabally, Kahleah Copper and Alyssa Thomas (Bonner’s fiancée and former Sun teammate) — entered Monday with a 12-6 record. They were second in the Western Conference, even with Copper missing the first 11 games with a knee injury.
