Monroe mayor to face no-confidence vote over claims made by council members ...Middle East

MONROE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Come Tuesday, Monroe Mayor Robert Burns is set to face a no-confidence vote from his fellow council members.

Burns is accused of using city logos and addresses to share personal political views, failing to conduct civil meetings, and failing to properly communicate with the entire council.

Monroe elections to be partisan, held on even-numbered years after passage of House Bill 3

“It’s completely baseless, and that’s why I say this is silly,” said Burns.

The vote was requested by council members James Kerr and Julie Thompson. Neither responded to multiple requests for comment from Queen City News.

Burns called the move political and dismissed other accusations about failing to share info with other members about new legislation from Raleigh that makes elections in the city partisan.

The mayor and members of the council have been at odds before. Last year, Burns was censured for comments praising the overturning of Roe v Wade.

“I have a lot of critics, sure, but I also have a lot of supporters and I got elected to do something and I’ve never changed who I am,” Burns added.

The no-confidence vote is set for Tuesday at 4 p.m.
