A father and son from suburban Chicago who drowned in Lake Michigan near the Indiana Dunes National Park over the July 4th holiday weekend have been identified.
According to the Porter County Coroner, David Meneou, 65, of Joliet, and Jameson Meneou, 20, of Lockport, drowned in a remote area near the town of Dune Acres in Porter County, Indiana.
The incident took place about 4:20 p.m. Saturday, when Indiana Conversation Officers and National Park Rangers responded to an active water rescue on the lake, adjacent to Indiana Dunes National Park. According to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, officers used off-road vehicles and a patrol boat to reach the area.
According to a preliminary investigation, both men where in the water when Jameson Meneou went into deep water and began to struggle. David Meneou attempted to rescue his son but also began to struggle in the deep water, officials said.
When officers arrived, the two men had been removed from the water by a Good Samaritan. Conservation Officers and rangers boated the men to the Port of Indiana while performing CPR, authorities said.
The father and son were then transported to a nearby hospital where they were both pronounced deceased, the DNR said.
The incident remains under investigation.
Sunday, the National Weather Service issued a warning of dangerously high waves at Lake Michigan beaches in the Chicago area, with “potentially life-threatening rip currents possible.”
“People have died in these types of quickly-changing conditions before,” the NWS said.
The warning was extended through 7 p.m. Monday, the NWS said, for all southern Lake Michigan beaches in Illinois, Indiana and Michigan.
