Ben Stokes’ nightmare at the crease just got even worse as India levelled up the Test series with England at 1-1.
The England skipper was sent back to the pavilion for just 33 in his side’s second innings against India at Edgbaston after he was trapped LBW via a sizzling delivery from spinner Washington Sundar.
Stokes had a forgettable display with the bat against IndiaGettyStokes reviewed the decision in the faint hope he’d nicked Sundar’s delivery into his pads, but it proved to be for nought as ball tracking and UltraEdge confirmed the umpire’s initial decision of out.
The 34-year-old’s departure meant he had scored a total of just 33 runs across the entire second Test having recorded a golden duck in the first innings.
Stokes’ performance with the bat paled in comparison to his opposite number, Indian skipper Shubman Gill.
Despite the series against England being his first as India’s new Test skipper, Gill has left Stokes in the dust when it comes to batting.
The 25-year-old blasted a staggering 269 runs from 387 in the first innings, which was followed up by a highly impressive knock of 161 from 162 in the second.
Gill’s total of 430 runs from two innings means he has scored 397 more runs than Stokes in the second Test.
The 397-run margin in a single Test is the largest-ever between two captains in Test history.
It is a statistic emblematic of Stokes’ batting woes in the latest series against India and over the last two years.
In the four innings he has batted against India this series, Stokes has scored 20, 0 and 33 twice for a total of 86 runs and an average of 21.50.
Stokes’ batting woes extend as far back as January 2024, as he has averaged just 26.80 from 28 innings of Test cricket.
The England skipper’s form at the crease has become a serious talking pointGettyFrom those 28 innings, he has hit just five half-centuries while his highest score is 80.
The 34-year-old has not registered a century in Test cricket since the second Test of the 2023 Ashes series at Lord’s, when Stokes blasted 155 runs from 214 deliveries.
England desperately need Stokes to shake off his batting slump sooner than later now that the Test series against India is level at 1-1.
The visitors wrapped up their first win on Sunday as they demolished England with a 336-run victory.
Gill unsurprisingly took man of the match honours thanks to his brilliant knocks as England were left to lick their many wounds.
Commenting on his batting, he said: “It’s very satisfying to be able to score those runs.
Gill was relentless with the bat against England in the second TestGetty“Before the series I worked on a few things and I’m happy I could put it into the game.”
India also had an impressive bowling display from Akash Deep to thank for the dominant display.
The 28-year-old snared a total of ten wickets across the second Test, six of which came in the second innings.
India will look to maintain the momentum going into the third Test at Lord’s in their bid to win their first Test series on English soil since 2007.
The third Test begins on July 10.
