Syria’s Minister of Emergency and Disaster Management, Raed al-Saleh, said on Sunday, July 6, that Jordan has confirmed its readiness to send a specialized ground team in addition to aerial intervention to help extinguish the wildfires spreading across the Syrian coast.
In a post on the platform X, al-Saleh stated that the move came following coordination between Syrian and Jordanian authorities through the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
He added that an agreement was also reached with Turkey’s Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, İbrahim Yumaklı, to strengthen on-ground coordination efforts starting Sunday morning.
According to al-Saleh, the plan involves increasing the number of firefighting teams and aircraft deployed by Turkey, in a manner that does not affect Turkey’s own emergency preparedness, to support the ongoing operations aimed at containing the large-scale blaze.
Joint field operations room established
Al-Saleh said that a joint field operations room has been established in response to the expansion of the wildfires in Syria’s coastal forests, which he attributed to extreme weather conditions, strong winds, and the presence of war remnants that have obstructed firefighting efforts.
He noted that several active Syrian organizations are part of the operations room and have begun providing logistical and field support to firefighting crews.
Support efforts have included deploying water tanker vehicles to assist firefighting teams, organizing volunteer groups made up of individuals previously trained in firefighting, and providing heavy machinery to create firebreaks and help contain the spread of the flames.
Among the most dangerous wildfires
Abdel-Kafi Kayyal, Director of the Emergency and Disaster Management Directorate in Latakia, told the state-run Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) on Sunday that the ongoing wildfire is among the most dangerous the region has ever faced.
Kayyal said firefighting teams are exerting maximum effort to prevent the fire from reaching nearby villages and populated areas.
He also noted coordination with the Ministry of Emergency and Disaster Management to mobilize support teams from other provinces, and with several ministries to provide tracked vehicles capable of opening new roads, thereby enabling teams to isolate and contain the fire’s hotspots.
Kayyal urged residents, tourists, and farmers to exercise extreme caution and refrain from lighting any fires during outings or agricultural activities.
He emphasized that efforts are ongoing around the clock to achieve full containment of the fire as soon as possible.
The wildfires broke out on Thursday, July 3, in the areas of al-Basit, Qastal Maaf, and Jabal Turkman in the mountainous countryside of Latakia governorate, western Syria.
