BERGEN, N.Y. – The Bergen Fire Department responded to an ammonia leak overnight at the Nortera Canning Facility. Fire officials say a faulty valve led to the leak, causing a constant flow of ammonia.
Employees were able to evacuate the building and isolate the issue before crews arrived. Fire officials said the problem could’ve been much worse.
“If it had got out, we would’ve had to evacuate the surrounding area up to a mile, depending on the severity of it,” said Kevin Bruton, Chief of the Bergen Fire Department. “The flamability is up there and there’s just a lot of other things we’d have to branch out to really take care of if that was the case.”
The fire department credited employees for their quick response. Thankfully no one was hurt.
