Lewis Hamilton’s fifth-fastest qualifying time at the British Grand Prix didn’t just upset the home fans in attendance at Silverstone.

The Ferrari driver is bidding to continue his incredible 11-year podium streak at his home race, but couldn’t follow up on some early promise.

Quick in Friday practice finishing first and third, there were hopes of a similar result on Saturday afternoon, but as the final ten cars passed the chequered flag it was Dutchman Max Verstappen on pole position with another outrageous lap.

His time pushed Hamilton even further from the top three to fifth, and one person couldn’t help but hide their disappointment.

Racing Bulls driver Isaac Hadjar was watching the moment Hamilton crossed the line in the media pen, and let out a ‘f***!’ before slumping off gutted.

Hadjar may well be contracted to rivals Red Bull who employ Verstappen, but the Frenchman has never made his love for Hamilton a secret.

Speaking ahead of his first season in F1, he and his fellow rookies were asked for their favourite drivers growing up and the camera quickly panned to Hadjar.

Haas’ Ollie Bearman said: “He loves Lewis Hamilton,” before the 20-year-old added: “Big Lewis fan. Biiiig Lewis fan.”

Bearman then embarrassed his fellow newbie, adding: “We did FP1 together in Mexico and he was like ‘I’m going to wave at Lewis when we drive!’”

Another rookie, Gabriel Bortoleto, added: “He was sweating the day we had to do a photoshoot and then he [Hamilton] gave his hand and he was sweating.”

“Never showered again!” Joked Bearman.

Ferrari looked like the first or second fastest car heading into Saturday on a fast track where they usually excel, but Charles Leclerc did even worse than teammate Hamilton as he ended up sixth.

The Monegasque has had his British teammate’s number most of the season, but was absolutely furious to be beaten this time.

Team radio after the finish line picked up a heated tirade where he blamed himself.

“So f***ing shit I am,” he said. “I am so f***ing shit. That’s all I am.”

As for Hadjar, he finished the day in 13th after a week where he’s been heavily linked with a promotion to the Red Bull senior squad for 2026.

It’s not been simple, though, as his debut quite literally ended in tears.

The French-Algerian driver spun out on the formation lap in Austria and was seen wandering back to the paddock with his fingers in his helmet full of emotion.

There he was approached by another Hamilton, Lewis’ father Anthony, who consoled him.

Reflecting on the moment, Hadjar said: “It was a nice moment, sharing time with someone like Anthony, the dad of my idol.

“It was quite a special moment. Lewis sent me a message later that day, so they’re really classy guys.”

Hamilton will now have to make up two places to extend his incredible Silverstone podium run on Sunday.

The 40-year-old has nine British Grand Prix wins, the most by any driver at a single track, but it will be a tall order to claim a tenth this year.

However a podium would still be cause for celebration, as he’s yet to record a top three finish for Ferrari in a feature race so far this season.
