Pre-Gamin’: Bulls vs Timberwolves (7:00 PM CT) – Projected Lineups, How to Watch, More ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

The 15-16 Chicago Bulls find themselves in the midst of a 1-1 homestand so far, with four games left on their United Center slate this week before they hit the road again.

On Monday night, the trick-or-treat Bulls will look to return to a .500 record as they host one of the West’s best, the 20-12 Minnesota Timberwolves.

Josh Giddey, now clearly Chicago’s best player, will look to build on his campaign for his first All-Star bid this season with another big night. Fresh off inking a four-year, $100 million restricted free agent deal to stick around the Windy City long-term, the 6-foot-8 vet has been a nightly triple-double threat while quarterbacking the second-fastest offense in the NBA.

Through his first 29 healthy games, Giddey has been averaging 19.5 points on .470/.390/.755 shooting splits, 9.2 assists, 9.1 rebounds, and 1.0 steals a night. The 23-year-old Bull appears to have taken a massive leap as a scorer, while continuing to evolve as a distributor.

So far, Giddey hasn’t made a massive impression on fans, perhaps thanks to his poor defense and his sub-.500 team’s inconsistency. In the first batch of fan votes, Giddey finished just 14th in the Eastern Conference, behind arguably inferior players like Brandon Ingram (12th) and OG Anunoby (13th) with 115,000.

Keep in mind, fan voting is weighted towards just 50 percent of the total sum used to determine the 10 All-Star starters this season. The other 50 percent is split between the media and players. NBA coaches vote on 14 bench players.

It’s looking increasingly likely that, at best, Giddey will be an All-Star reserve.

Playing the second night of a back-to-back on Saturday, the Bulls saw their second win streak of the season ended by the return of Milwaukee Bucks superstar forward Giannis Antetokounmpo, who got his first action in three weeks. Now, the Bulls will seek to hand Minnesota its third consecutive defeat.

What To Watch For

Minnesota has been linked to Coby White trade chatter for a while. And it makes sense, given that the Timberwolves could use some more supplemental ball handling and the Bulls may not have an appetite to offer their 25-year-old starting shooting guard the $30 million annual salary he hopes to command in free agency this summer. For now, Donte DiVincenzo — who’d likely be the key cog returning to the Bulls in a White swap — starts at the point, with three-time All-Star shooting guard Anthony Edwards really running the show. Edwards will likely prove to be a very tough cover for the Bulls’ starting backcourt. The 24-year-old has been on a tear so far this year. In 25 healthy bouts, he’s averaging 29.3 points on .492/.397/.811 shooting splits, 5.2 boards, 3.7 dimes, 1.4 swipes and 0.8 blocks a night. It’s probable that Billy Donovan will have a quick whistle so he can bring in Ayo Dosunmu and Tre Jones to spell Giddey and White as needed defensively. Dosunmu is Chicago’s best man-to-man defensive guard, although Jones is a steal machine (his 1.5 swipes per game rank 13th in the league). Nikola Vucevic and Jalen Smith will be leaned on a bit more heavily than usual, with the Bulls’ top rim-protecting center, reserve Zach Collins, sidelined with a toe injury. Given the size and strength of Minnesota’s starting frontcourt — power forward Julius Randle and center Rudy Gobert, both three-time All-Stars — Donovan will probably trot out a two-big lineup featuring both Vucevic and Smith early and often. When Collins is healthy, Donovan typically prefers to play Collins at the five alongside Smith at the four. © Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports Per Will Gottlieb of CHGO Bulls, Collins has sprained his big toe. Donovan expects the 7-footer to miss all of this week’s remaining home games.
