One of the first questions that host Crystal Renee Hayslett asked was how the newest soap opera is pushing boundaries of what Daytime Drama can be in terms of inclusivity. Mosley replied eloquently sharing, “We’re pushing boundaries, first of all just in the look [of the show]. You know, we’ve never seen a show that looks like our show. From the wardrobe to the hair, all the different textures that are represented on the show.” Beyond the Gates has a predominantly black hair and makeup team, a first for a Daytime Drama.
Mosley explained how the art of soap opera allows for a unique connection to their viewers due to the daily nature of the genre. “Because it’s in homes every single day, it’s allowing the world to see the beauty and richness of what we already know to be true. But also the messiness. You know, we’re allowed to be messy.” The actress excitedly continued, “We’re allowed to do all of that too, but still come back to a core family and be supported. Because that’s what we know to be true in our communities.”
