The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office was asking for the public’s assistance in locating a vehicle that struck and killed a 15-year-old boy riding a bike on Tuesday night, sheriff’s deputies said.
About 9:34 p.m., officers from the McHenry County Sheriff’s Department and the Crystal Lake Fire Department responded to the crash on Terra Cotta Road near Deering Oaks Lane, a news release said. According to a preliminary investigation, the victim, along with another 15-year-old were riding bikes southbound on Terra Cotta Road when an unidentified vehicle struck one of the riders from behind.
Family members identified the teenager as 15-year-old Nicholas Laureys, a student at Woodstock North High School.
According to police, the driver of the vehicle did not stop and fled the scene. Police added that the teen’s bike had a red, activated taillight at the time of the incident.
The teen was transported to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead, the sheriff’s office said.
In an update Thursday afternoon, the sheriff’s office said it’s asking the public and body shops/car dealerships to contact police if they come across a red or dark-colored 2017-2018 Jeep Cherokee with front end damage. Anyone with a tip can call sheriff’s officials at 815-338-2144.
The crash is being investigated by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Major Crash Investigation Unit and the McHenry County Coroner’s Office, the release said. More information was expected to be released later Thursday as the investigation continues, officials said.
