On the eve of the West Indies vs Australia 2nd Test, the news isn’t about cricket but rather something more serious and important. During the first Test of the series, a story broke out. Kaieteur News, a Guyanese newspaper, claimed that a prominent fast bowler from Guyana has sexually assaulted multiple women.

The player was part of the West Indies team, it claimed. But the player in question wasn’t named. The detectives online paired two with two, and soon Shamar Joseph’s name came out. This was mere speculation until women started speaking online. One shared her harrowing experience in a video. 11 women alleged that Shamar had sexually harassed them, including his then 18-year-old cousin.

The news took the cricketing world by storm. Cricket West Indies (CWI) also got involved. And now West Indies head coach Daren Sammy has spoken about it as well.

“We are all aware of what’s been going on in the media. I am very close to my players. I’ve had conversations with them, making sure their mental space is good,” Sammy told reporters at St George’s.

The former Windies captain stated that he wants justice to be served. But it won’t happen right now. He will wait for CWI’s decision regarding the matter and the due process.

“One thing I can say is that we believe in justice. We are a community that believes justice must be served. However, there’s a process. We will continue to support in whatever way we can to make sure that due process and the right system are followed. As a cricketing board, and for me as the head coach, I want justice for everyone. But, as of now, it’s all allegations. And we know the justice system. You’ve got to wait for things to process the right way,” he added.

Sammy was also asked if CWI will launch an internal investigation but Sammy didn’t answer. “I can’t answer that. I’m pretty sure they are doing all they can to make sure, like I said, the right process is followed,” Sammy concluded.
