LIV Golf star Sam Horsfield has hit back at his critics after he walked out of Open Qualifying on Tuesday.
Horsfield’s hopes of playing in the final major of the season came crashing down after a nightmare morning which started with a 1am fire alarm.
Horsfield had a nightmare first nine at Open qualifyingGettyThe 28-year-old was taking part in qualifying at West Lancashire Golf Club, with the top five places claiming a spot at The Open.
However, his chances of joining the field at Royal Portrush on July 17 were all but over after just nine holes.
He carded a seven-over-par first nine in what was a woeful start, leaving him out of contention in the 36-hole event.
Horsfield reached the turn after playing a total of 43 shots following three consecutive double bogeys on the seventh, eighth and ninth.
It was at that point that he opted to call time on his day.
The LIV professional abruptly left the course in Lancashire, failing to notify officials that he was retiring.
And because of that, it meant he was later handed a punishment.
Horsfield received criticism from some quarters for his actions and he attempted to clear the air on social media.
He posted on Instagram: “So I flew back home Sunday night and landed into Heathrow at 4pm. By the time I got up to West Lancs it was about late [sic].
“Had a bit of dinner and fell asleep at 10:30/11pm. At 1AM the fire alarm went off and we had to go stand outside for an hour or so.
The LIV star was disqualified for not telling officials about his withdrawalGetty“I eventually got back to sleep around 5:30am for a 6am alarm which I slept thru [sic] but fortunately my caddy woke me up…
“I felt completely dizzy and out of it all day.
“Don’t listen to the propaganda out there against LIV players by some of these pages.
“Hope this clears things up. See you guys in Valderamma next week [for the LIV Golf Andalucia event].”
Horsfield joined LIV Golf when the controversial breakaway organisation was formed in 2022.
He is a member of the Majesticks team on the tour with teammates Lee Westwood, Ian Poulter and Henrik Stenson.
His best finish of the LIV season so far has been a T17 in Adelaide in February and he sits 37th in the overall standings.
LIV Golf saw two of their stars withdraw on TuesdayGettyHorsfield’s fellow LIV star Adrian Meronk also pulled out early from his 36-hole event at Dundonald Links on Tuesday.
Meronk withdrew after carding a three-over par first round.
Several LIV players had a better time though, with Westwood, Lucas Herbert and Dean Burmester all qualifying for The Open at Portrush.
Meanwhile, Horsfield’s Majesticks teammate Poulter was competing alongside his son for a place in the major too.
Poulter Sr and his son Luke were playing at Royal Cinque Ports in Kent but failed to claim a spot in the major.
The 2025 Open Championship begins on Thursday, July 17 and will run through until Sunday, July 20.
