The incident occurred on Monday, June 30, when a Boeing 737, operating under the airline’s low-cost subsidiary Spring Japan, was en route from Shanghai Pudong Airport to Tokyo Narita Airport. With 191 passengers and crew onboard, the flight encountered a serious mechanical issue that caused it to plummet rapidly from around 36,000 feet to 10,500 feet in just 10 minutes, according to reports from The Standard and other local outlets.
Japan Airlines offered compensation of 15,000 yen ($93 USD) and one night’s accommodation to affected passengers.
The plane’s pressurization system malfunction triggered an alert, prompting the pilot to declare an emergency and divert the flight to Kansai International Airport in Osaka. The plane landed safely at around 8:50 p.m., and no injuries were reported. An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the emergency.
