Manchester United and Brentford remain in talks over a deal for Bryan Mbeumo.
talkSPORT understands the winger’s medical with the Red Devils is provisionally booked for next week, with the two clubs still negotiating over the final transfer fee and deal structure.
Mbeumo is wanted by Man United for their new-look attack – but Brentford aren’t letting him go on the cheapGettyMan United entered the race for the Cameroonian star with an initial bid of £55million, comprising £45m up front and £10m in add-ons.
However, the Premier League rivals are now understood to be finalising a package worth more than the £62.5m United paid Wolves for Matheus Cunha.
Tottenham have also been linked with an interest in Mbeumo following his old Brentford manager Thomas Frank’s appointment as the new Spurs boss.
But the forward has always made it clear Old Trafford is his preferred destination this summer, over a reunion with Frank in north London.
The Red Devils have already agreed personal terms over a £250,000-a-week contract with the 25-year-old.
Incredibly, that is five times his current salary at Brentford, where he collects £50,000-a-week in wages. He has one year left to run on that deal with the Bees.
Tottenham are instead expected to focus their efforts on a swoop for Eberechi Eze – although they are not alone in their interest, with arch rivals Arsenal also eyeing the Crystal Palace star.
A move to join Man United comes after a career-best campaign for Mbeumo, who ended the season with 20 goals and seven assists for the Brentford.
He featured in all of their 38 Premier League matches and helped the west London side to a tenth place finish.
In total, Mbeumo has managed 121 direct goal involvements [70 goals, 51 assists] in 242 matches for the club in all competitions since his arrival from Ligue 1 side Troyes for just £5.4m in 2019.
Mbeumo enjoyed the best season of his career last season and could earn a huge transfer to Old TraffordGetty Mbeumo was linked with a move to Tottenham following Frank’s move to White Hart Lane – but he has always only wanted UnitedGettyThe deal with Man United will be a club record sale for Brentford, who appointed set piece coach Keith Andrews as their new manager to replace Frank on Friday.
He won’t be the only high profile departure, either with club captain Christian Norgaard set to join Arsenal.
For United, Mbeumo’s arrival will see Ruben Amorim continue his ambitious summer spending after overseeing the historic club’s worst-ever Premier League campaign.
The Red Devils have already landed a new No.10, spending £62.5m to sign Brazilian ace Cunha from Wolves.
The giants have been linked with a host of targets, with signing a new centre-forward another priority.
Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres has been strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford, where he would be reunited with his old Sporting Lisbon boss Amorim.
It’s still unclear where Gyokeres will end up this summer – the Swede is in-demand after scoring 97 goals in 102 games for SportingAFPBut a deal for the Swedish goalscorer is uncertain amid rival interest from Arsenal.
talkSPORT understands Gyokeres’ expects to join Mikel Arteta’s side and talks with the Gunners are ongoing.
But the north Londoners also remain in contact with RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko, with no decision yet made over who they will choose to sign.
