Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. Annie Gilligan of Dubuque, Iowa will make the three-hour drive to Ames with her commitment to swim and study at Iowa State as part of the class of 2031. She publicized the news on Instagram, writing:

I am extremely excited and grateful to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at Iowa State University! I want to thank my family, coaches, and friends for supporting me along this journey! Thank you to coaches Matt and Morgan for this opportunity! Go Cyclones!

Top SCY Times:

50 Freestyle: 23.52 100 Freestyle: 51.21 200 Freestyle: 1:50.40 100 Backstroke: 56.72 200 Backstroke: 2:04.41

Gilligan is currently in the midst of her junior year at Dubuque Senior High School. She trains year-round with the Dubuque Area Swimmin’ Hurricanes and specializes in sprint freestyle and backstroke.

Gilligan has steadily improved throughout each season of her career. Over the past 12 months, she has dropped her PBs from 23.94 to 23.52 in the 50 free, 51.86 to 51.21 in the 100 free, 1:51.25 to 1:50.40 in the 200 free, and 2:11.35 to 2:04.41 in the 200 back. Her 100 back PB of 56.72 was produced in November 2024, though she’s been 57.0 or faster on four occasions since, showing it was no fluke.

At the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union (IGHSAU) meet last month, she finished as the runner-up in the 200 free with her current PB and eighth in the 100 back (58.08) after posting a 57.08 in the preliminary heats. As a sophomore, she placed second in both events, clocking a then-PB of 1:51.25 in the 200 free and her current best in the 100 back.

While Gilligan has opted to stay local for most meets, she qualified for and competed at Speedo Sectionals in Rochester last March, where she placed 16th in the 100 back (58.09), 18th in the 100 free (52.14), 21st in the 200 free (1:54.29), 22nd in the 200 back (2:05.97), and 93rd in the 100 fly (1:01.64).

Led by head coach Matt Leach, Iowa State is a Division I program that competes in the Big 12 Conference. The women took 10th place at the conference meet last February. To earn a spot in finals, it took times of 23.17, 50.48, and 1:49.72 in the freestyles, and 54.99/1:59.84 in the 100/200 back. Based on these standards, Gilligan would be just outside the cutoff in a few of her top events.

On the team’s 2024-25 depth charts, Gilligan would have ranked first in the 200 free, second in the 100 free, third in the 50 free, fourth in the 100 back, and fifth in the 200 back.

Joining Gilligan in Ames in the fall of 2027 are Adrianna Spelman and Andi Clement. Spelman brings complementary strengths to Gilligan’s event lineup—she’s faster in the backstrokes (55.75/2:01.58) but trails in the freestyles (23.81/52.33/1:53.28). Clement adds sprint depth with times of 23.43/50.97 in the 50 and 100 free, both marginally faster than Gilligan, plus versatility in the 100 breast (1:05.65).

With a year and a half to improve before arriving on campus, this trio could form the core of the Cyclones’ relays for years to come.
