PHOENIX — Arizona Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo did not have a specific timeline for injured players Corbin Carroll, Gabriel Moreno and Ildemaro Vargas, but he felt comfortable saying Carroll is the furthest along.

Carroll suffered a fractured left wrist on a hit-by-pitch at the Toronto Blue Jays and went on the injured list on Tuesday. Lovullo mentioned sometime around the All-Star break as a possible forecast.

“ I had a quick interaction with him the last day I saw him in Chicago and he said, ‘I’m coming back as fast as I can. As soon as there’s no pain or minimal pain, I want to come back,'” Lovullo said.

Carroll worked with the other outfielders fielding grounders and taking fly balls before Friday’s game at Chase Field (without throwing, of course).

His injury comes at a tricky time when looking at the All-Star Game. Carroll did not make the starting lineup, but he deserves consideration for a reserve spot with a .914 OPS and 20 home runs this season.

The All-Star Game is on July 15, nearly four weeks after Carroll suffered the injury.

“He wants to be available if he does make the team,” Lovullo said. “He’s a hungry player and he deserves everything that’s coming his way. But if he’s not healthy, it’s not gonna happen.”

Eugenio Suarez back without MRI

D-backs third baseman Eugenio Suarez returned to the batting order on Friday after missing two games. He was hit in the hand by a pitch on Monday and came out of the game. He progressively felt better as the swelling went down throughout the week. His initial X-ray came back negative, and he did not undergo any MRI.

Lovullo said he was progressing so well that they did not feel an MRI was needed.

“One of the toughest players I’ve ever managed,” Lovullo said. “I’ve been in this game a long time. I’ve been in this game for almost 40 years and I’ve come across some unbelievably tough people, but Geno is at the very top of that list.”

Justin Martinez surgery details

Martinez underwent elbow surgery with Dr. Keith Meister, after which he sent a message to fans on Instagram.

“Thanks to all my fans, my colleagues, friends and family,” he wrote in Spanish. “This has been a long journey together. See you next year.”

Lovullo on Friday revealed that Martinez had a ligament replacement with a brace put in as opposed to a revision. That will impact Martinez’s recovery time, which will at minimum push well into 2026.

“So the trajectory changed a little bit once they went in there and did what they had to do,” Lovullo said. “So it’s gonna be a little bit longer than the 12 months.”

Kendall Graveman back on a mound

Diamondbacks reliever Kendall Graveman (hip impingement) got back on the mound for a bullpen on Friday. Lovullo said it went well and Graveman felt good afterward, so the team will see how he recovers.

Graveman has been on the IL since June 8.

Donations flying in

Over $18,000 in donations to the Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation have been in made in honor of Ketel Marte and his late mother Elpidia Valdez after a heckling incident left him in tears on Tuesday.

Donations have come from more than 30 states and four continents, according to the team.

17 in 17

Starting Friday night, the Diamondbacks play 17 games in 17 days ahead of the All-Star break: thee against Miami, four against San Francisco, three against Kansas City, four at San Diego and three at the Los Angeles Angels.

The D-backs will not have another stretch involving this many games without any off days for the rest of the season. It is a grind that comes after a tough stretch of injuries as the club is three games back of a postseason spot looking to remain in the hunt.

A really good or a terrible stretch could make the difference in how they approach the trade deadline, as well.

“ I don’t want to limp to that finish line,” Lovullo said. “I want this team to stay extremely focused and that’s my job. I gotta make sure these guys go out there and stay on the gas pedal … because there are gonna be teams that limp in and limp out of the break.

“There is an art form to it where you go out and continue staying focused and play energized baseball. That’s the plan, create awareness, talk about it, let these guys know what’s acceptable and what’s not. We got a good baseball team. I know we’re banged up. We gotta embrace the group that’s here.”

Zac Gallen donates 23,000 gallons of milk

Starting pitcher Zac Gallen donated 2,300 gallons of milk to the St. Mary’s Food Bank this week in an effort to fight food insecurity in the Valley.

“Not only did the Milkman deliver, but he also stayed to sign autographs, chat with staff and do interviews, making the day extra special for our team,” St. Mary’s Food Bank posted on Facebook.

Aramis Garcia outrighted

The D-backs have made a handful of recent minor league roster moves, including sending catching prospect Adrian Del Castillo on a rehab assignment (lower back) to the complex league. Reliever Drey Jameson is on a rehab assignment at Salt River Fields, as well.

Catcher Aramis Garcia cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Reno after Arizona designated him for assignment last week to sign James McCann. The D-backs additionally signed veteran outfielder Albert Almora Jr. and pitcher Daniel Mengden to minor league deals.
