Saint Thomas, who treated University of Northern Colorado basketball fans to an electric season in one year with the Bears, signed a summer league contract with the Philadelphia 76ers of the National Basketball Association.

Thomas, a 6-foot-7 forward, was not drafted in two rounds of the NBA Draft this week. He transferred to the University of Southern California of the Big Ten Conference for the 2024-25 season after a breakout year at UNC. Players are paid for summer league participation for meals, lodging and transportation, according to The Sporting News.

With the Bears in 2023-24, Thomas started all 32 games and averaged a team-best 19.7 points and 9.8 rebounds with 4.2 assists per game. He was honored multiple times as the player of the week in the Big Sky Conference through the regular season. He was one of four players nationwide to average at least 19.7 points and 9.8 rebounds.

Thomas was selected at the Big Sky’s newcomer of the year and he was a unanimous first-team all-conference selection.

Thomas and Weber State’s Dillon Jones were the best players in the Big Sky during the 2023-24 seaso. Jones was selected 26th overall in the 2024 NBA Draft by the Washington Wizards. Jones’ draft rights were later traded to the New York Knicks, and then Knicks then traded Jones to the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Jones was a member of Thunder’s NBA Championship team this season, becoming the first player ever from the Big Sky Conference to win an NBA title.

Thomas was the first UNC men’s player in program history to record at least 500 points, 250 rebounds and 100 assists in a season. He’s the only UNC men’s player with 600 points (631) and 300 rebounds in a season (315).

Thomas was the only USC player to start all 35 games last season, according to a news release from the men’s basketball program. He averaged 9.5 points and 5.9 rebounds per game. Thomas scored a season-high 24 points in early January against Iowa. He recorded a double-double with 23 points and 13 rebounds in a postseason College Basketball Crown Tournament game against Villanova in early April.

Thomas transferred to UNC after two seasons at Loyola Chicago.

Dalton Knecht, another former UNC player, was drafted 17th overall by the Los Angeles Lakers in 2024. Knecht played two years at UNC out of junior college before transferring to the University of Tennessee for his final year of eligibility.

Knecht received a heightened level of attention at Tennessee where he was one of the best players in the country.
