It is difficult to look at the picture, taken by his wife and posted on social media to mark the Prince’s 43rd birthday, and not be mindful of the difficult times the couple have endured personally over the past few years.
On a human level, set against the Princess’s struggle with cancer and the Prince’s sibling estrangement, it is a moment of genuine, unadulterated contentment. And on a canine level… who can resist the sight of a few puppies?

Peta is known for its outspoken views and shock tactics, and it has campaigned against dog breeding for some time. Its campaigns against using animal testing in the cosmetic industry have been successful in the UK and worldwide, and its raising of issues from the treatment of the bulls in Pamplona to holiday companies promoting marine parks has brought to the public consciousness important questions in our treatment of animals.
The Conservative MP Andrew Rosindell is leading a group which has written to the Charity Commission on this point. “It is completely wrong that an extreme organisation like Peta, which is blatantly political in its activities, is given the tax advantages afforded to a charity,” he said.

Let William and Kate, and their children, enjoy the simple pleasure of having a puppy in their midst (they are keeping one of the litter). And, meanwhile, Peta would be wise to recognise one of the immutable laws of public relations: sometimes it’s best not to say anything.
