BROCKPORT, N.Y. – SUNY Brockport’s nursing program is set to officially become a School of Nursing on July 1.
The change comes in response to the growth the program has seen over the last 15 years. Its enrollment has grown from 205 undergraduate students in 2010 to around 900 students in fall 2024, including graduate students.
Kathy Peterson, a 40 year veteran of the program who has served as its department chair since 2010, will become the school’s inaugural dean.
The school has added four new academic programs throughout its course, three of them at the graduate level. A fifth new program, a masters in science in nursing education, will launch in fall 2026.
About the new school
The creation of a School of Nursing is part of a reorganization of SUNY Brockport’s Division of Academic Affairs. SUNY Brockport was officially recognized as a university in 2022 and the new structure reflects the institution’s university status.
A planned renovation of Hartwell Hall will create 6,000 additional square feet of laboratory and simulation space for students, doubling the current amount. The additional space will allow the school to increase enrollment of both its bachelor of science in nursing program and accelerated nursing programs.
