Australian winger Dylan Pietsch could remarkably face the British and Irish Lions in a Wallabies jersey he designed himself.

When Rugby Australia unveiled their kit design for the highly anticipated Lions tour last October, Wallabies and Western Force star Pietsch was revealed as the artist behind the artwork – the first Indigenous Australian to create the iconic green and gold jersey.

Pietsch, who has been called up to the latest Wallabies squad, runs his own artwork business, alongside playing professional rugby, called Wulwaay and the designs channel his Wiradjuri heritage.

But first the 27-year-old artist is expected to wear a special new blue Western Force jersey this Saturday in Perth, having also designed his Super Rugby side’s shirt for the first match of the 2025 Lions tour of Australia.

Pietsch sat down with talkSPORT’s Alfie Reynolds in Perth and he revealed how the collaboration with Rugby Australia came about.

“I’ve got an art business called Wulwaay which means growing evolving man in my [Indigenous Australian] language and I started that about four and a half years ago,” Pietsch said.

“I just wanted to do something outside of rugby and I have always designed and painted as a bit of a hobby and I just decided to do it as a third space kind of vibe because rugby is pretty intense.

“It’s great to have a little creative outlet outside of that and you can let your brain do whatever it wants.

“I have done the [Western] Force Lions jersey, the Waratahs Lions jersey and the Wallabies Lions jersey.

“In 2023 I did the whole Lions tour artwork as a whole entire piece so the Aboriginal artwork that you will see with the Lions is from that work.

“It’s pretty crazy that in 2025 you’re seeing what I did in 2023 – it’s a long process and it made me realise how much work is being done behind the scenes for that to happen.”

Pietsch drew on some of the most iconic images of Australia as inspiration for his groundbreaking work, including Uluru (Ayers Rock) along with gum trees, Kangaroos, emus and eagles.

Pietsch keeps himself busy outside of rugby with his art businessGetty

“There is specific meaning behind the images which he created while on tour with the Barbarians as he explained: “They gave me four days to do the [Australia jersey] art work and I was on the Barbarians tour because we were on call for the Rugby World Cup at the time.

“We were playing and I was up until four or five AM just dotting away.

“A lot of things in Aboriginal culture are connected through the river, that’s where most of our life was from, fishing there, bathing there.

“So there’s a river [at the bottom], and I have got each country with different colours and different connection circles throughout.”

The gruelling 96 hour task was so demanding, Pietsch admits he began seeing visions of his artwork mid-game.

“I do a lot of visualisation in-game and meditation, and every time I would close my eyes there were dots everywhere, I had four days of straight dots,” Pietsch said.

Pietsch and his Force teammates will be looking to exploit the several early weaknesses exposed in the Lions 24-28 loss to Argentina and create further disruption to Andy Farrell’s plans.

And although the Western Force finished their 2025 Super Rugby Pacific season with a woeful run of five consecutive losses, Pietsch believes he has designed a Force jersey that can help beat the Lions.

“If we play the way we want to play we definitely have the skill and the ability [to beat the Lions],” Pietsch said.

“If I’m part of a team that beats the Lions, I’ll take that any day of the week, Wallabies or Force, anyone I don’t care.

“Just to be part of the Wallabies squad for the Lions tour is awesome.”

If the Western Force can stage an upset on Saturday, It would be a huge blow for the Lions test match preparations against Australia. Every moment of action this weekend will be live on talkSPORT and it’s not one for listeners to miss.
