First Alert Weather In-Depth: Urban vs. rural and how location impacts summer temperatures ...Middle East

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – It is a rhetorical question, but how are you holding up in the heat and humidity? Whether you are working or enjoying outdoors, these conditions can present a real challenge.

As a meteorologist, I can tell you that where you are in Western New York plays a major role in how hot it feels. This variation can be due to the urban heat island effect. On a hot summer afternoon, for example, temperatures in the city can be significantly higher and remain elevated well into the evening. Why? Urban areas are filled with heat-retaining materials like asphalt, brick, and dark rooftops, which absorb and store heat from the sun.

In contrast, suburban and rural areas experience faster cooling as the sun sets, thanks to less dense development and more natural ground cover. So, while it may feel oppressive downtown, nearby outlying areas could be enjoying a bit of relief late in the day.

So far this season, Rochester has recorded three days with temperatures at or above 90 degrees Fahrenheit. On average, the Rochester Airport sees between eight and ten such days per year. Last year, we hit that mark with eight 90-degree days. The record, however, was set in 1952 with a scorching 32 days over 90 degrees. Let’s hope we do not come close to breaking that record this year.
