Eugenio Suarez stays hot, Diamondbacks fend off Rockies with long ball ...Middle East

Sport by : (Arizona sports) -

After the Diamondbacks fell behind early on Saturday at Coors Field, the red-hot Eugenio Suarez — in his first game as designated hitter this season — hit a solo home run to give Arizona a lead it never relinquished for a 5-3 win over the Colorado Rockies.

The latest victory secures a second series win over Colorado, which Arizona went 2-1 against at Chase Field back in May.

Suarez, who finished the game 2-for-3 that also featured a single, has nine hits and nine RBIs in his past three games — including four home runs. He continues to lead the MLB in RBIs (67) with two on Saturday, and he has 134 dating back to late June last year.

His home run tally grew to 25 one night after hitting the 300 career milestone on Friday.

Ketel Marte also continued a blazing road trip by getting on base five times, reaching with four hits (two doubles) and a walk. He nearly had a second homer in Colorado with a ground rule double in the second inning.

With the four spot, Marte has 10 hits in his last three games.

D-backs’ Ildemaro Vargas made his first start at third base this season on Saturday and went 1-for-4.

Shelby Miller got the ball in the ninth and coolly struck out three Rockies batters.

It started off ominously, however, as a throwing error by Vargas allowed Colorado third baseman Ryan McMahon to reach first and be safe at second on a bunt.

In the end, Miller was credited with his eighth save.

A Jalen Beeks seven-pitch eighth frame set up Miller, with Ryan Thompson shaking off a runner on second in the seventh.

Merrill Kelly, despite giving up two first-inning runs, made it through six and kept the damage at three. He struck out seven to offset three walks.

Diamondbacks’ next game

Arizona (39-37) completes its three-game set against Colorado (17-60) on Sunday with first pitch at 12:10 p.m.

Righty Brandon Pfaadt (8-4, 5.38 ERA) will face Rockies right-hander Antonio Senzatela.
