We look ahead to this Group D match at the 2025 Club World Cup with our Flamengo vs Chelsea prediction and preview. Will either team back up their Matchday 1 victories?
Flamengo vs Chelsea Stats: The Key Insights
The Opta supercomputer makes Chelsea favourites to win. The Premier League side do so in 65.1% of simulations. Both teams won their opening Group D games of the FIFA Club World Cup 2-0. This will only be Flamengo’s second ever competitive game against English opposition, having lost to Liverpool in the 2019 Club World Cup final under the old format. Two teams who started their FIFA Club World Cup Group D campaigns with a 2-0 victory meet on Matchday 2.
Chelsea eased to a win over Los Angeles FC thanks to goals from Pedro Neto and Enzo Fernández.
Neto’s strike was his 15th goal contribution (7 goals, 8 assists) since the start of the 2024-25 season, making the Portuguese winger the sixth Chelsea player with at least 15 contributions in that time, tied with Arsenal for the most of any Premier League team.
Enzo Maresca’s men will be eager to make it two wins from two at the Club World Cup on Friday at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, but they will come up against a Flamengo side also looking for a second victory.
Chelsea have played against Brazilian opposition twice before, both in the old format of the Club World Cup, losing the 2012 final 1-0 to Corinthians, before beating Palmeiras 2-1 in the 2021 final.
Flamengo have only ever faced English opponents once before, losing 1-0 to Liverpool after extra-time in the 2019 final of the old format of the Club World Cup.
Like Chelsea, Flamengo come into this game off the back of a 2-0 win. Their routine victory over ES Tunis on MD 1 was sealed through goals from Giorgian De Arrascaeta and Luiz Araújo. De Arrascaeta in particular could be a danger for Chelsea, having been directly involved in 15 goals in 15 games for Mengão in 2025.
Flamengo are managed by former Chelsea left-back Filipe Luís, who made 26 appearances for the club in all competitions in 2014-15, scoring once against Derby County in December 2014 in the League Cup.
Chelsea will also be playing against Everton… no not that one. Flamengo striker Everton has not been in great form, though, only scoring once in 11 Brazilian Serie A appearances this season. But should he find the net in this game, the 29-year-old will have scored more goals than the Premier League side of the same name have in their last three games against Chelsea combined (0).
The battle for possession will be an interesting one. Chelsea had 64.8% possession in their win over LAFC on Monday, and the Blues have had over 60% possession in 11 of their 16 matches against teams from outside of England since the start of the 2024-25 season.
However, Flamengo have had a greater share of possession than their opponents in 17 of their 18 games across the Club World Cup, Serie A and Copa Libertadores in 2025.
Former Chelsea midfielder Jorginho is also likely to feature, having joined Flamengo from Arsenal in time for this competition. He recorded an assist in his debut for the Brazilian side against ES Tunis, his first since April 2024, and completed an impressive 92 of his 99 passes in the game.
Flamengo vs Chelsea Prediction
The Opta supercomputer believes Chelsea will make it two wins from two, with the Blues taking the three points in 65.1% of its 10,000 simulations. Flamengo claim a second victory of the tournament in 15.1% of sims, while the remaining 19.8% finish all square.
Following MD 1, Chelsea (98.2%) are heavy favourites to progress through Group D and into the last 16, ahead of Flamengo (77.0%). Los Angeles FC still have a slightly better than one-in-five chance (21.8%) while ES Tunis have a very slim likelihood after their opening defeat (3.0%).
