ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Rochester is gearing up to celebrate Juneteenth with a series of events and activities throughout the city. Renowned children’s book author Alice Faye Duncan is in town to educate people of all ages about the significance of Juneteenth.
Duncan has been presenting interactive stories and motivational speeches to kids, teens, and adults across the Rochester area. She made an appearance at Teen Empowerment on June 17, sharing insights on the holiday. Duncan will also be stopping by at the Boys and Girls Club on June 18, from 4 p.m. through 5:30 p.m.
“A lot of people are under the impression that Juneteenth is just like a ‘Black holiday.’ But it’s not,” Duncan said. “Juneteenth represents liberation wherever there are people who are not free, then Juneteenth represents it’s a sign and a symbol of what is possible.”
Duncan is scheduled to speak at Nazareth University’s Shults Center on Thursday, June 19, at 6 p.m. Her talk is free and open to the public.
