Rece Davis and Pete Thamel have begun previewing all the action and major storylines to come in the 2025 college football season. That includes a debate about which quarterback is liable to have the most impactful season this fall during the latest episode of The College GameDay Podcast.
An easy pick for many analysts is Texas QB Arch Manning. He has the name recognition as a Manning and boasts the elite background as a 5-star prospect who has been waiting his time in Austin.
Davis went along with Manning as his top pick, though the GameDay host wanted to clarify his reasons. Yes, Davis believes in Manning’s talent, but he also has a big belief in what Steve Sarkisian can accomplish as a playcaller.
“I know that’s what you expected, but not for the reasons,” Davis admitted. “This is a healthy chunk of my belief in Arch Manning’s talent and a gargantuan chunk in my belief in Steve Sarkisian as a guy who can take QBs and make them succeed beyond what their experience might indicate… Case in point: Mac Jones (at Alabama).”
Thamel could not agree with Davis’s pick. In fact, Thamel did not have Manning anywhere on his top-5 list.
“I think Arch Manning will have a very good season. I certainly have faith in his talent, I certainly have a ton of respect for Steve Sarkisian as a play caller. But I want to see a little more,” Thamel conceded.
Instead of Manning, Thamel is going with Clemson QB Cade Klubnik to have the best and most impactful season at the QB position:
“I’m going with Cade Klubnik as my top QB, and it’s for the same reason I don’t have Arch Manning on my list is production,” Thamel said. “He has consistently produced, he has consistently improved, and what a fascinating, fascinating opening weekend… I would love to be at Clemson to watch LSU roll in there.”
Both players appear primed for major seasons, and both QBs have the potential to put together deep runs. The Longhorns and Tigers are among the national favorites to make the College Football Playoff, and we will see if Klubnik and Manning are playing for conference titles and the Playoff this fall.
