Peterborough United have been left frustrated after Ricky-Jade Jones joined Bundesliga side FC St. Pauli on a free transfer.

The 22-year-old star has made the decision to head to Germany after his contract with the League One club expires.

Jones has spent his entire career with Posh, playing over 200 games and scoring 41 goals across six years.

Last season, he netted 11 times and provided three assists in the third tier, starring in what was a tough campaign.

But, with his current deal running out at the end of this month, Jones has now opted to move on.

And Peterborough chairman Darragh MacAnthony, a regular talkSPORT contributor, doesn’t seem happy about the way one of his stars will depart.

Following the announcement of the move, MacAnthony gave some extra details on Jones’ decision, revealing he rejected four different Championship teams to go to the Bundesliga.

He wrote on X: “He [Jones] turned down 4 brilliant champ clubs to do this move, which has cost his home town club a lot of money.

“Not going to lie… it stings and makes me bitter for the moment as the kid has been with us so many years and I couldn’t have been more supportive of him. But we move on and don’t look back.

“This is football and it can kick you in the nuts at times.”

MacAnthony hinted that Jones rejected paid offers from English clubs during the season that meant Peterborough couldn’t cash in.

One of those clubs is likely to have been Cardiff City, who confirmed they had tried to bring in the forward in January.

The Posh chairman has clearly been left frustrated that he will instead leave the club on a free deal this summer.

Jones will embark on a new journey though, and he’s looking forward to getting going in Germany’s top-flight.

In his signing reveal, he said: “I felt the time had come for a new challenge and I’m glad to get this opportunity at FC St. Pauli.

“I’m looking forward to a very international team, enthusiastic fans and big teams in one of the strongest leagues in the world and want to contribute to a successful season with my ability.”

St. Pauli manager Alexander Blessin added: ”His explosive pace is Ricky’s most obvious quality and often he can only be stopped by a foul.

“But he knows how to use his pace properly, which makes him not only an attacking threat but also a massive team player when pressing and transitioning into defence.“

Blessin is looking forward to seeing Jones’ speed and his pace sees him as one of the fastest players in football.

He can incredibly sprint 100m in a rapid 10.9 seconds.

Jones reached a staggering top speed of 22.3mph in League One.

That ranked him among the quickest players in the 2024/25 Premier League season if he were playing for a top-flight club.

This impressive feat places him ahead of notable Premier League players like Gabriel Martinelli, Alejandro Garnacho, and Marcus Rashford.

Jones will now take his speed and his footballing talent to Germany, looking to make a big step up in his career.

He will come up against another EFL star in Jobe Bellingham, who departed Sunderland for Borussia Dortmund earlier this summer.
