The opening match of the new look Club World Cup sees MLS side Inter Miami take on Egyptian side Al Ahly in their home city to kick off the month long tournament which will officially crown the best football club in the world.
Inter Miami were one of the last teams to book their place in this summer’s showpiece men’s football event, doing so by finishing last year’s MLS regular season with the best record to claim the host nation’s designated spot in this summer’s Club World Cup.
Former Liverpool and Barcelona player Javier Mascherano was announced as the club’s new manager in January this year, and currently has the Herons sixth in the overall MLS standings just shy of the halfway point for the season, six points off the top of the table.
Inter Miami recently went on a run of only one win in eight matches, which included defeats in both legs of their Champions Cup semi final, but have returned to a bit of form ahead of this weekend’s tournament opener, winning 4-2 and 5-1 in their last two matches, with Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez combining for seven of those goals.
Five of the starting XI from the last time Barcelona won the Champions League in 2015 are now plying their trade at Inter Miami, with Mascherano the manager and Messi, Suarez, Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets all part of the playing squad.
Al Ahly, by far the most successful team in Egypt who recently won their 45th league title, and record 12 time African Champions League winners, will take on Messi and co in the opening game of the new look Club World Cup.
This weekend’s game will be Spanish manager Jose Riveiro’s first match in charge of the Cairo-based club, who sacked their previous manager last month after being knocked out of the semi finals of the African Champions League, despite having won their third consecutive Egyptian Premier League.
