For the first time since 2005, Colorado State has an NCAA outdoor national champion in track and field.
Senior Mya Lesnar won the shot put title Thursday night in Eugene, Ore., serving notice with her first throw that ended up being the winning toss. It is the second shot put national championship for Lesnar, who won the indoor title in 2024.
She is the first CSU athlete to win both an indoor and outdoor national title and is the first Ram to win an outdoor championship since Loree Smith won the hammer throw in 2005. Lesnar and Smith are the only two CSU women to ever win national titles.
Thursday night at Hayward Field, Lesnar served notice with her first throw, shoving the shot 62 feet, 4.5 inches. It set the bar that no other competitor could reach. Lesnar ended up with the top two throws in the competition. Her heave of 61-11 on her third attempt was the second-best throw of the event.
No other competitor came close to Lesnar’s mark. Abria Smith of Illinois was second with a throw of 61-10.25.
“Heck yeah it was. It was pretty awesome,” Lesnar told CSURams.com. “Obviously throws like that don’t happen often, and to do it on my first one was pretty cool. I just went calm, hit my cues. (Coach Brian) Bedard and I have tons of trust, and that’s exactly what we did.
“I think it had more of an effect for me. It meant more for me to do it on the first one, to start off the competition strong. A lot of the other ladies responded. It was awesome.”
The title capped a decorated CSU career for Lesnar, who in addition to winning the 2024 indoor national title won four straight Mountain West Conference outdoor championships in the shot put as well.
She was fifth at last year’s outdoor nationals and fifth at this year’s indoor championships in the event. She is a four-time first-team All-American.
Lesnar was the second of three CSU throwers competing at the national meet. Loveland High alum Kajsa Borrman finished 21st in the hammer throw Thursday, and Klaire Kovatch will compete in the discus Saturday.
