Keith Andrews is a contender to replace Thomas Frank as Brentford manager, talkSPORT understands.
Former Republic of Ireland midfielder Andrews has been the Bees’ set-piece coach since last summer.
Andrews would be a rogue appointment given his lack of any head-coach experienceFrank was keen to take a number of coaches with him to Tottenham but Andrews has stayed in west London.
The 44-year-old has never been a head-coach at any level but could now land his first top job in the Premier League.
Andrews is best known for his time as a holding midfielder for Wolves – where he became the club’s youngest captain in over a century – along with spells at MK Dons and Blackburn.
The Irishman has also made a name for himself as a football analyst on Sky Sports.
Reacting to speculation around Andrews and the Brentford job, ex-Republic of Ireland manager Martin O’Neill fired a warning to his compatriot.
Speaking on the White and Jordan show, O’Neill told talkSPORT: “Keith would be an interesting one because he hasn’t managed before.
“I hope he gets the job, because as a pundit a few years ago, he was a particularly vitriolic critic of mine for the Republic of Ireland team.
“He derided the use of set pieces that we were using to try and win some football games and the irony of irony is that he becomes the set-piece coach at Brentford.
“So I hope he gets the job to realise that management is a wee bit more difficult when you’re on the field of play than it is actually sitting in the pundit’s room.
“If he has been able to get them off to fast starts [from kick-off], that is terrific and that’s in his favour.
O’Neill has not forgotten Andrews’ criticism of him during his reign as Ireland boss“But management is a wee bit more difficult than Keith thinks it is.”
Frank himself was promoted internally from the coaching staff after the departure of Dean Smith to Aston Villa in 2018.
The Norwegian was announced as the new Spurs boss on Thursday after winning a tug-of-war over highly-rated coach Justin Cochrane.
talkSPORT understands Brentford wanted to keep Cochrane – once a youth coach with Tottenham – and had shortlisted him as a contender to succeed Frank as boss.
The Bees are also interested in Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna while Burnley’s Scott Parker is another contender.
Meanwhile, star player Bryan Mbeumo could yet follow Frank to Tottenham despite Manchester United‘s efforts to sign him.
Frank has immediately made a play to take Mbeumo with himtalkSPORT understands Spurs have stepped up their interest in the Cameroonian winger in recent days.
The Red Devils are preparing another bid after an offer worth £55million was rejected.
Mbeumo is thought to prefer a move to Old Trafford – with United willing to meet his £200k-a-week salary demands – but Brentford are holding out for at least £60m.
Tottenham can offer Champions League football having beaten the Red Devils in the Europa League final in May.
Spurs took the controversial decision of sacking Ange Postecoglou weeks after claiming their first major trophy in 17 years.
