Phil Taylor may be a 16-time world champion, but darts icon Bobby George ‘can’t see’ him keeping pace with today’s superstars.
Taylor is widely regarded as the greatest darts player of all time given he won just shy of 90 major titles throughout his three-decade reign atop the sport.
There’s very little Taylor did not win during his playing daysGettyHowever, darts has changed drastically in terms of prize money, the number of events on tour, the hours of practice required and the age of those at the top of their games.
The discussion of age quickly became relevant thanks to the emergence of 18-year-old sensation Luke Littler, who made the final of the World Championship aged just 16 in 2024.
He went one better at the 2025 edition of the tournament as he became the youngest World Championship winner in history at 17 years and 347 days.
Luke Humphries, who beat Littler in the 2024 final, is only 30 and another who is at the peak of his powers having won the 2025 Premier League.
With Taylor’s prime occurring well before Humphries and Littler broke onto the scene, many darts enthusiasts have pondered how ‘The Power’ would have fared against the likes of the two Luke’s.
But George, one of the sport’s greatest characters, doesn’t think it would have gone too well for Taylor.
“I can’t see it,” George said on the latest episode of the talkSPORT Darts podcast.
“Phil is a front-runner, he can hit everything when he’s in front.
“But when he gets behind, he goes. Of course, they didn’t hit him properly, they didn’t hit him heavy enough.
“He (Taylor) was a great dart player. But he wouldn’t live with the players [of today]. Well, none of us would.”

“I went round to his (Taylor’s) house once and he was on the dartboard,” George said.
“He said, ‘I’ve done four-and-a-half hours’. I said, ‘Can you do a couple of hours for me, can you?’
“I couldn’t do that now. But he was dedicated. And that’s why he could win tournaments.
“It’s easier to say I don’t think he can, but I really believe it.
“I don’t think he can compete with the guys of today because they’re too good, they’re too consistent. They’re playing each other all the time.”
George revealed Taylor would spend hours honing his craft on the dartboardAFPOne tournament which Taylor has won that Humphries and Littler have not is the World Cup of Darts.
Taylor won it an impressive four times between 2012 and 2016 alongside Adrian Lewis to add even more silverware to his trophy cabinet.
Humphries and Littler now have the chance to win the World Cup of Darts as they will represent England in this year’s edition of the tournament.
The event begins on June 12, with talkSPORT to provide live coverage from Germany which you can listen to here.
