This Saturday, the public is being invited to tour five, lovingly created and tended gardens in Mendocino County, the Garden Conservancy announced.

In a press release, Garden Conservancy spokesman Cliff Weathers explained that there would be “five unique opportunities to explore private oases in Mendocino County, some of the most well-known private gardens in the area.”

The private gardens opening their doors, as described by the Garden Conservancy, are:

Fish Rock Ranch Gardens (Yorkville): On a hilltop with splendid views among redwood and Douglas fir forests, we developed a blend of shade and sunny gardens. Seven hundred fifty tons of rock frame hillside walkways through perennial gardens bordered with roses. There are raised beds for vegetables and cutting flowers. Several seating and dining areas take it all in. Woodshop Grounds (Boonville): This 3/4-acre oasis, cultivated with organic practices, surrounds a renowned studio furniture maker’s shop and showroom. It features custom garden furniture from reclaimed redwood and unique concrete planters and border walls. A continuous bloom is prioritized, with June showcasing vibrant Phlox, Crocosmia, Campanula, Lychnis, and Heuchera. This personal Eden beautifully blends artistry and nature. Wildwood (Philo): Step into a breathtaking 30-acre garden with towering 150-foot redwood trees and expansive green meadows. It’s a vibrant tapestry woven with both edible plants and a stunning array of temperate blooms. Imagine strolling through a bountiful potager bursting with edible plants, then discovering an impressive collection of over 500 plant varieties, from classic peonies, maples, and dogwoods to meticulously shaped yew and boxwood hedges. Beyond, a dedicated collection of trees, shrubs, and conifers showcases a diverse world of woody species, inviting you to explore nature’s grandeur at every turn. Christiansen-Arner Stone and Water Sculptures (Mendocino): Nestled in the Mendocino woods, the Christiansen-Arner Sculpture Garden surrounds their studio, showcasing unique stone and water sculptures along an inviting path. The main feature is a large water sculpture set in a pond with a white granite background. Roughly half of the pieces have reticulating water, creating a serene, river-like atmosphere. The garden’s design fosters a healing environment, with sculptures complemented by Himalayan bamboos, rare rhododendrons and camellias, diverse water plants, and various woodland flora. Pepperwood Pottery (Navarro). This 1/4-acre garden, originally designed by wildlife biologist Russell Link, offers a unique blend of history and horticulture. Established decades ago, it features well-tended perennial beds, new annual plantings, and mature fruit trees over 40 years old. Two nearly century-old grape arbors evoke the property’s homestead origins, where the original house dates back to 1906. A highlight is the four-tier water fountain, providing soothing sounds that complement the garden’s walkways and pottery showrooms. This evolving space also boasts a unique, curl-resistant peach tree, estimated to be up to 100 years old.

If you go: The gardens will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for registered guests. Tickets for garden visits are $10 per person, or $5 for members of the Garden Conservancy. Children 12 and under are admitted for free when accompanied by a parent or guardian. All registrations must be processed online through the Garden Conservancy’s website: gardenconservancy.org/opendays.
