Quote of the Day: Yogi Berra on Why 'A Nickel Ain't Worth a Dime' Anymore ...Saudi Arabia

News by : (Parade) -

A first-generation Italian-American, Berra's family came through Ellis Island when they moved to the country, first staying in New York City before moving the family to St. Louis. There, Berra, his siblings, and friends spent their days playing sports like baseball and soccer in the streets, growing up alongside other famous ball players like Jack Maguire, who gave Berra the nickname after he saw him sitting crisscross applesauce before getting ready to head up to bat, a pose that Maguire thought resembled a Hindu man he had seen in a movie.

However, his baseball dreams were put on hold when World War II broke out, and he joined the Navy and traveled the world, finding himself in the thick of it on D-Day, where he saw conflict at both Utah and Omaha beaches. He later received an honorable discharge, and in 1946 he was free to once again pursue his baseball passion, this time with the Newark Bears, the Yankee's best minor-league team.

Berra became the team's best catcher and an ace hitter, earning him even more notoriety. After his time on the field ended in 1963, he used his baseball knowledge to coach, and he worked with both the Yankees and the Mets throughout the following decades. After getting fired from the Yankees in 1984, Berra went on to work with the Houston Astros in 1986, where he remained until his 1992 retirement.

Quote of the Day by Yogi Berra

Berra was quoted as saying this financially minded thing. And while we were unable to confirm exactly when (or where) it was originally said, the enduring quip often pops up when people talk about inflation and the rising cost of everyday goods and services.

As he became a successful baseball player, he came to see his own value grow over the years. According to the Yogi Berra Museum & Learning Center, the former Yankee was once paid $65,000 and, in 1957, was the highest-paid Major League Baseball player. While that salary may not seem like much by modern standards (the museum states that player salaries can now reach into the tens of millions), it meant a whole lot back then.
