Queen’s Club played host to the birth of what could very well become a formidable British doubles pairing.
In their first match together as a duo, Katie Boulter and Emma Raducanu breezed past Wu Fang-Hsien and Jiang Xinyu in the first round of the Queen’s Club Championship.
Boulter and Raducanu’s doubles partnership is off to a dream startCameraSport via GettyIt marked just the second time Raducanu had played doubles in her career, having made her debut in the format back in 2022.
But the 2021 US Open champion never looked fazed alongside the British no.1.
The match was also part of a historic occasion at the venue, as this year’s Queen’s Club tournament marked the first time the west Kensington venue had hosted women’s tennis in 52 years.
Raducanu and Boulter will be in the thick of it given they are both competing in the women’s singles against Spain’s Cristina Bucsa and Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic respectively.
But they will at least get to take some winning momentum into their round of 32 matches on Tuesday thanks to their straight-sets victory over the Wu and Jiang.
Before a ball had been hit, Raducanu conceded she was ‘very nervous’.
“I don’t know if you could tell, but, yeah, probably more nervous than the singles, because I just didn’t necessarily know what to do,” Raducanu said.
“I’m really happy once we got out there, Katie made me feel so comfortable, and I’m just so pleased to get a win.”
So, can fans expect to see them join forces once again at Wimbledon?
According to Raducanu, it may be a case of wait-and-see.
The pair played their part in making history at the Queen’s Club in LondonGetty“We haven’t spoken about it,” Raducanu said.
“It worked pretty well, so we’re just going to keep on trying to do as best we can this week.”
Boulter cheekily added: “Scrap what she said – we’re going for the Wimbledon title! No, I’m just kidding.”
The British duo secured a crucial break of serve early in the first set and raced to a 4-2 lead.
However, Wu and Jiang broke back and levelled the contest at 4-4.
But Boulter and Raducanu secured their second break of the set to take it 6-4.
Could we see the all-British duo reprise their partnership at Wimbledon?GettyFrom there, it was one-way traffic as the British no.1 and no.2 stormed home to claim a comfortable straight-sets victory, winning the second set 6-2.
Although they are firmly focused on the action at Queen’s, both will no doubt have an eye on Wimbledon, which commences on June 30.
Boulter has never made it beyond the third round at her home slam, while Raducanu matched her best finish at Wimbledon last year when she reached the fourth round.
