Youngsters Step Up, Olympics for Bedard? Frondell vs. Spellacy, and Other Blackhawks Bullets ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

I don’t think I’m going to do our Blackhawks bullets again until next year, so let’s make this a good one, eh? The Blackhawks put a wrap on their calendar year against the New York Islanders last night with a shootout loss. But we saw more young players begin to step up their games last night and play confidently. As we look ahead to 2026, seeing more young Blackhawks impacting games is important. And, hopefully, exciting.

We will find out around 10:30 AM CT today if Connor Bedard made Canada’s roster for the Olympics. Recent reports don’t sound promising… but we’ll cross our fingers and toes that his injury didn’t cost him a spot. With Jason Dickinson injured last night and Dallas coming to town for a game on New Year’s Day, the Blackhawks are in trouble at center. If he’s out for any amount of time, the Blackhawks would be down their three best centers.

Blashill says Dickinson is day-to-day. Questionable for Thursday vs Dallas.

— Ben Pope (@BenPopeCST) December 31, 2025 We’ll see how much more the Blackhawks want to work with the Oliver Moore experiment. He certainly didn’t hurt his chances of seeing more action in the middle last night — he was terrific. The more he plays, the more comfortable Nick Lardis gets in the NHL. He was all over the ice last night and his scorer instincts are showing more consistently. Experience is a good thing and he’s learning and getting better every night. A good read here from Ben Pope about the Blackhawks’ defensemen maybe getting a little more nasty. The current mix of guys playing in the NHL has some sandpaper, but Connor Murphy is really the only guy who consistently is willing to give somebody an extra slap or a whack. (Ethan Del Mastro and Nolan Allan are very much in the “willing to FAFO” category for what it’s worth.)

The Blackhawks' defensemen are friendly. Maybe too friendly, Jeff Blashill thinks. He wants to see more physicality and even nastiness from the group: "Those little Chris Chelios cross-checks in the hips and the ribs."New story: t.co/MuL0VIPMY5

— Ben Pope (@BenPopeCST) December 30, 2025 IIHF All three Blackhawks prospects will be in action at the World Junior Championship today — but you’ll only have to watch two games. Václav Nestrašil and Czechia face Latvia at 2:30 before AJ Spellacy and the US face Anton Frondell and Sweden — with first place in the group on the line — at 5 PM CT. In the OHL, Jack Pridham and Kitchener are on the ice at 1 PM before Marek Vanacker, Parker Holmes and Brantford skate at 6 PM. Vanacker, Holmes and Brantford lost 3-2 to Erie yesterday. Vanacker had one assist in the game. Pridham and Kitchener also played last night. And he scored a goal in the first period. And another in the third. Kitchener lost 4-3, but Pridham has five goals in his last two games and now has 22 on the year. Where’s my fire emoji?
