Why Oakmont is cut in half as US Open star must deal with cars on Pennsylvania Turnpike ...Middle East

Oakmont will host the 2025 US Open this week, and unlike many other golf courses, it is split in half.

This is unusual for any golf venue, but especially one that is hosting a major.

All you need to know about 2025 US Open

Oakmont is widely considered to be the toughest test in America and one of the hardest courses anywhere in the world.

Winning here is a big thing and is ranked higher by fellow professionals than other courses.

And the unique nature of the split in the course contributes to this.

Why is Oakmont cut in half?

Oakmont is split into two because of the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

This is the Route 76 highway that runs right through the grounds.

The road separates seven of the holes from the other 11 and the club house.

Given Oakmont is one of the oldest and most prestigious golf clubs in the USA, you would think they would have managed to avoid a road being placed through it, but that isn’t the case.

This is because there was a railroad there initially that has been turned into a major piece of infrastructure.

Holes 2 through 8 are on the eastern side of the Turnpike, with 1 and 9-18 on the western.

Initially, there wasn’t a footbridge, so golfers would walk along the road to get to the other holes, but now, there are two bridges that were first built in 1920.

The bridges were expanded in the 1990s due to the growing number of fans, which was paid for by an anonymous club member to the tune of $500,000.

Through the majority of the course, the Turnpike isn’t visible, but that changes at hole 12, where you can see and hear it.

It also comes into play on the first and tenth greens which slope back-to-front towards the road.

The ninth, eleventh and 13th tee boxes also back into the embankment surrounding the Turnpike
