Thousands of people are set to break their fast in central London's Trafalgar Square at a free open iftar event this weekend to mark the end of Ramadan.
The keynote event, organised by the UK-based charity Ramadan Tent Project, will take place on 29 March which is expected to be the last day of Ramadan ahead of the Eid al-Fitr holiday.
This is the final gathering of the Ramadan Tent Project’s series of Open Iftars across the UK, designed to provide a sense of community for Muslims and non-Muslims alike during the holy month of Ramadan.
The event in Trafalgar Square will begin at 4.30pm and continue through sunset. When the sun sets, attendees will come together to break their fast with a traditional Iftar meal.
Organisers promised not only a shared meal but also engaging speakers, discussions on community cohesion, prayers, and opportunities for spiritual reflection.
Last year, a similar event was held when over 3,000 people broke their fast with speakers including London mayor Sadiq Khan.
Throughout March, the Ramadan Tent Project has hosted a variety of open Iftar events at iconic venues across the UK, including Shakespeare’s Globe, the Guildhall Great Hall, and the V&A Museum.
While these events are primarily a celebration of the tradition of fasting and breaking fast, they are open to everyone, regardless of whether they are observing Ramadan or not, as well as non-Muslims.
The events are a chance for people of all faiths and none to come together, learn about Ramadan, and experience the joy of shared meals and meaningful conversations.
