A Willits man was arrested recently on suspicion of reckless evading after attempting to elude pursuing officers by driving in the opposite lane of travel, the Ukiah Police Department reported.
According to the UPD, around 7 p.m. on March 13, a UPD officer “on routine patrol in downtown Ukiah (saw) a red Nissan traveling above the posted speed limit,” then initiated a traffic stop after the vehicle “failed to come to a stop at the intersection of South Dora Street and West Gobbi Street.”
Instead of stopping, the UPD reports, the driver of the Nissan “immediately accelerated … and a vehicle pursuit began as the suspect and the officer traveled eastbound on West Gobbi Street.”
When the pursuit reached Seminary Avenue, the UPD reports that the suspect vehicle “began traveling on the wrong side of the road on Seminary Avenue. The officer did not follow the suspect in the wrong direction of travel, but was able to use the westbound lane of Seminary Avenue and reposition himself behind the suspect’s vehicle as he turned southbound onto South Oak Street.”
At the dead end in the 700 block of South Oak Street, the “suspect pulled into a parking lot … where he immediately exited the vehicle, jumped a fence, and fled on foot.”
The pursuing UPD officer then broadcast a description of the suspect and his clothing to law enforcement officers in the area, “and a few minutes later a UPD Officer observed a male matching that description walking in the 700 block of South State Street.”
The UPD reports that the suspect, identified as 29-year-old Willits resident Steffen R. Cantua “was taken into custody without further incident” and booked into Mendocino County Jail on suspicion of “evading in the opposite lane of traffic, reckless evading, resisting arrest and driving under the influence of alcohol.”
The UPD also notes that “Cantua was arrested for driving under the influence earlier in the month, and was again determined to be heavily intoxicated.”
